Hello students!

Here is another option for you for your final response paper, Response Paper 6. Because some of you are very interested in improving your ability to use transition strategies and words/phrases in your articles, theses, and technical proposals, I am providing you with an opportunity for this response paper to annotate, highlight, comment upon, and provide marginal identification in a scientific article from a scholarly journal.

The two articles linked below were forwarded to me by John Wilson. His assessment of these is that they are emulable models of strong writing in his discipline:

"Effect of Flow-Induced Exchange in Hyporheic Zones," by Andrew Worman et al.

"A Modeling Study of Hyporheic Exchange Pattern," by Michael N. Gooseff et al.

So, if you are choosing this option for your Response Paper 6, please print a copy of the article you are most interested in. Highlight terms in the document that you think serve a "transitional" purpose (in that they allow the author to transition smoothly and helpfully between sections). Also, in the margin write sentences that indicate your interpretation of "when" the writer is doing "what." Is he signaling the significance of the work? Is he introducing a technical term or an equation or the difference between this project and previous ones? See how the writer's essay flows from beginning to end. If you look at your marginal comments at the conlusion of this excercise, you should see a logical flow of ideas and information from top to bottom. So, you are highlighting important transitional words and sentences throughout the document and you are providing commentary in the margin. That's it! You do not have to write an actual "response paper" here; all you are doing is assessing the article you've chosen by adding marks and commentary on the article print-out itself.
