PART ONE: In
this essay, you will follow the models in your textbook on pages 22-26.
Rather than using the textbookÕs prompt – about automobiles and fossil
fuels – we will use a topic concerning the banning of cigarette smoking
in public places. Follow the guidelines for ÒOption 2Ó on page 22.
Then read the studentÕs sample essay (Brittany Tinker) on pages 23-24.
Use her essay only as a model. Continue to follow the guidelines on pages
25-26, for showing why this issue is problematic and significant. Your
essay should not answer a question; it should pose one. Your question
will be Òshould cigarette smoking be banned in all public places?Ó Your
essay will need to be three pages long.
PART TWO:
Drawing upon the understanding you gained of the complexity of the
Òsmoking in public placesÓ issues from Part One, explore the problem further
and make a claim. Your essay will develop into a modified
Òsummary/strong responseÓ essay, like the one you read in Chapter Six of Allyn
and Bacon (written by Sean Barry, pg
130-132)). Using BarryÕs essay as
a model, and utilizing some of the information you gathered and perspectives
you considered in Part One, pose a strong response to either a) Florence KingÕs
essay ÒIÕd Rather Smoke than KissÓ (AB pg. 142-147) or b) the advertisement
ÒWelcome to Marlboro CountryÓ by Adbusters.org (AB 148). Your new essay will need to be four to
five pages long.
